Vega One Review

There’s a total of 20 grams of plant-based protein. It comes from the following sources:

Pea Protein: Extract of the pea legume, it’s low in the important amino acid cysteine. It has a high amount of purines, which can increase uric acid that leads to gout. The liver flushes out uric acid, but when it reaches excess levels it can lead to side effects.

Hemp Protein: A high fiber protein that is low in the amino acid leucine. Examine.com has added that it’s:

“not yet linked to unique health benefits”

It’s often higher in fats and fiber than other protein blends.

SaviSeedTM(sacha inchi) protein: A high protein plant that is native to South America. It has low amounts of the amino acid methionine.

Pros:

  • Has a high amount of protein and fiber, available in 7 flavors, and it’s sweetened with stevia.

Cons:

  • Expensive, customers have complained about the taste, and there’s no mention of the amino acid profile.

There’s 40% of the daily value of protein in one shake, but each of these kinds of protein are missing key amino acids. Together they help supplement each other, but it’s not as effective as whey protein.

The reason why there are 3 different kinds of proteins is because alone they are deficient in key amino acids the body needs. To find the very best 10 meal replacement shakes, you can click here.

The company also doesn’t provide a listing of the full amino acid profile, this makes it hard to determine whether or not it’s well rounded enough to provide a proper meal replacement. This might be why they don’t answer whether or not you can use it more than once a day, the company says:

“even good things should be enjoyed in moderation”

Instead of answering the question of whether or not you can use more than one shake they advise:

“it’s best to talk to your health care practitioner”

So it’s likely that just one shake a day is recommended, instead of 2, which whey protein meal replacements often allow.

A 20 serving jug costs $69.99, this averages at a price of $3.49 per shake.

This is fairly pricy considering the brand is poorly reviewed in terms of taste and consistency. There are a lot of ingredients added like probiotics and vegetables, but it’s still significantly pricier than other brands.

It’s non-GMO, which is good, but the overall price is still high when you realize the amino acid profile is never listed.

Customer Reviews

There’s currently 633 negative customer reviews on Amazon.com. Here’s what the average person has to say:

“It tasted like a cross between dirt and sewer water!”.

“It’s just not pleasant”.

“leaves a terrible after taste in your mouth” .

“really strong bitter taste and terrible smell”.

Many had a hard time trying to drink this shake due to its overly sweet and unpleasant taste. The company does do a good job of responding to these negative reviews however. They often offer other flavor samples in order to pay people back, and perhaps seek out another flavor.

Some customers also complained about the high amount of calories, which can reach 170 calories depending on the flavor. There are meal replacements that offer just 90 calories, or a full 80 calories less.

Making sure one reduces calories is the key thing needed for weight loss. That’s why some meal replacements offer a maximum of 180 calories with 2 shakes, while this brand matches that amount of calories in just one serving. More well-rounded meal replacements are featured in the top 10 list of the very best.

Sugar

There’s less than a gram of sugar that comes from just one source:

Stevia Extract: A plant-based sweetener that’s up to 150 times sweeter than regular sugar. It’s known for having little to no effect on blood sugar, as well as being safe to use since it does not cause weight gain.

Though this sweetener is healthy to use, it’s important to not overuse it as it can have a strong licorice or bitter sensation.

Some customers have commentated on the high use of stevia found in Vega One:

“sickeningly sweet”.

“I don’t know why they would put sooooooo much stevia in it”.

“has a VERY strong stevia after taste”.

Many other reviews question the amount of stevia used. Though this sweetener is effective at providing a good taste, when too much is used it can overwhelm the taste of a shake.

This is often the case with plant-based protein. Companies often have to add much more sweeteners to mask the potential vegetable taste of plant protein.

Business

The makers are Sequel Naturals Inc, they are based out of Canada.

There’s been a series of FDA sponsored recalls:

  • several batches of Vega One Shake was recalled after there was trace amounts of a restricted antibiotic. It’s used to treat typhoid fever and eye infections. The company claimed that a 3rd party company made an enzyme that was contaminated with this ingredient. Though since the makers get their ingredients from other manufacturers, there’s a possibility for contaminations.
  • The company released bars that were contaminated with trace amounts of lactose. It’s unknown why this was allowed, but the makers did allow for money back return for people who don’t want to consume milk.

They also offer money back return for 30 days, but only on unused products.

"This shake has a strange taste and doesn't really help with hunger."

Conclusion:

Vega One shake is good, but it has some issues.

It’s sold at a high price and there have been many customer complaints about the taste. For many it was unpleasant to drink and that they couldn’t stomach drinking it regularly.

It does have a high amount of protein and it’s sweetened with healthy stevia, but better alternatives exist that were rated much more favorably by customers. Much better options are available at a reduced price with better ingredients.
